What does *NSYNC mean ? - JustiN, ChriS, JoeY, LansteN and J.C. Although all the members of *NSYNC were born in different states of the USA it isnt surprising that they met in Orlando. Each one had already decided on a career in Showbiz. JC and Justin were presenting the Mickey Mouse Show on the Disney Channel while Joey and Chris were working for Universal Studios. Chris and Justin got to know each other at an audition for a band and subsequently became friends. Nothing came of this casting but Chris couldnt get the idea of starting his own band out of his head. He convinced Justin, who in turn told JC about the plan. As JC and Joey had already been friends for years and Chris and Joey knew each other from Universal Studios, the path to Joey wasnt difficult. Even after only the first rehearsal Justin, Chris, Joey and JC realized that their voices were almost perfectly in harmony and they were definitely on the right track. It was also clear to them that the technical performance of the dance routines had to be co-ordinated and perfect, and therefore, they practiced for hours in a dance studio. The bands manager, Johnny Wright, was at this point already very interested in the boys, instinctively sensing that he was in the presence of four extremely talented boys, who were ready for huge success. Essentially everything was perfect, but nevertheless a small detail was missing. This detail was a bass voice. Although a number of Talent Scouts spent weeks searching Orlando and its surroundings for a suitable bass voice, it was to no avail. Only after Justin had the bright idea of telephoning his singing teacher to ask him about suitable candidates, did they get Lances telephone number. Justin immediately grabbed the telephone and talked Lance into coming to Orlando for an audition. Lance came, sang and won. After the audition Justin, Chris, Joey and JC didnt want to let Lance go. After some persuasion Lance decided to join *NSYNC. There was now no stopping the boys. After only a short time the multitalented fivesome had practiced the first songs along with the matching choreography and shown their manager exactly what they were capable of. They stormed into the Top 100 in record time with their debut single I Want You Back before quickly reaching the Top Ten. No one was more amazed by the swiftness of their breakthrough than *NSYNC themselves. And, of course, now anyone who has seen *NSYNC on stage will know why Justins mothers choice of name was so appropriate ! ! !

Although *NSYNC had already exceeded all expectations with the success of their debut single I Want You Back, in 1997 they moved up a gear. 1997 really was a Golden Year. It began with the gold discs for I Want You Back and Tearin Up My Heart and ended with a gold disc for their debut album. Their comet-like ascent was honored with numerous awards in Germany, for example the VIVA Comets and the Bambi in Cologne for Newcomer of the Year. The I Want You Back and For The Girl tours were hugely successful. Their breathtaking live shows, consisting of acrobatic interludes, fantastic dance routines and their explosive charisma, didnt only convince confirmed *NSYNC fans but was responsible for an ever-increasing growth in the fan base. Is *NSYNCs success just the result of a contrived marketing campaign or the result of hard work, a lot of talent and luck? Not only did *NSYNC have a successful 1997, it was also a very busy one. It began with numerous appearances in Germany (on VIVA, MTV, Bravo TV, Wetten, da , The Dome, Pop Explosion), IFA performances, their October tour and, finally, the crowning finale on WDRs New Years Eve Party Die Nacht 97/98. These appearances and performances alone didnt achieve the success; it followed numerous magazine and radio interviews along with the filming of videos and dozens of photo sessions. The constant flying from A to B, through which *NSYNC proved their professionalism, can also not be overlooked. Despite enormous stress they always managed to summon a smile for the cameras. How can this sudden demand for *NSYNC be explained? Obviously, it was clear to anyone who heard *NSYNC that it was no flash in the pan phenomenon. Rather, it had all the makings of something that was going to go all the way. Everyone who saw Justin, Chris, Joey, Lance and JC live realized that the incredible chemistry between the five bundles of energy would attract more than just a very young audience. Even their first live performances were something special. The sweat in the dance studio with their choreographer Robert Jacquez was paying dividends. Building on the artistic training that each member of *NSYNC had already undergone, Mr Jacquez was able to motivate the boys to even more difficult dance routines (Tearin Up My Heart). Anyone who themselves loves to dance will easily realize just how much of an effort it is to not only to perform these difficult routines but also to sing at the same time. The fact that *NSYNC havent lost their voices is only thanks to the years of singing lessons and their hard-earned physical condition. But what use is musical and dance talent without the suitable songs? By finding an experienced manager in the shape of Johnny Wright access to first class songwriters like Dennis Pop, Toni Cottura or Veit Renn was made easier. As Dieter Bohlen of German pop band Modern Talking said in an interview: A good song can be destroyed by a bad interpretation. Equally a terrible song can be brought to life through charisma. In *NSYNCs case the charisma and vocal harmony make a good song even better. With their energetically explosive charisma *NSYNC can, for example, with their song Here We Go, set even the most sluggish of bodies in a party mood. And, in all honesty, no one has covered Rod Stewarts rock ballad Sailing with so much feeling and beauty as *NSYNC. The self - written funk song Giddy Up also gets under your skin. It could be said that with their debut album *NSYNC hit the jackpot and impressively proved their vocal and musical range. *NSYNCs success was built from hard work, a huge amount of talent, and that all important portion of luck. And, of course, not forgetting their enormous personal charisma.
